Hi, I’m Liz—and this is Within Herself.
I’m really glad you found your way here. 🤍
For 37 years, I lived life thinking I was different. Always feeling like I didn’t exactly belong, but I could never really put my finger on why. It never made sense because people seemed to like me, I was always included in things, and have been ” successful” ..but in the background I always felt different, over-sensitive, over-thinking, etc. I felt, deeply. More than other people, and I didn’t know how to express emotion in a healthy way. I learned to shove it down.. being ‘too sensitive’ was looked down upon by everyone else – so what was wrong with me?
Not knowing how to process emotion or how to talk to others when something was wrong, lead me to developing an eating disorder at 18 years old. Fast forward, drinking became my best friend because it made me feel better, better to function around others and gave me a sense of calm and confidence that I could not feel when sober. Fast forward again, and I was now an alcoholic. Managing my life (emotions) with booze. Until it got so out of control that I almost lost everything… I decided to get sober, and after a few attempts, I did… Though, the ED snuck back in and I became bulimic again.
I couldn’t understand, why did one addiction get traded for another addition every time? Why couldn’t I just BE with MYSELF !? Why did I dislike myself so much that I couldn’t bear the thought of being with myself? Addiction wasn’t just something I struggled with—it was something that consumed me. It dictated my thoughts, my choices, my relationships, and how I saw myself. There were long stretches where I truly believed this was just who I was… that recovery was something meant for other people, not me…
But I was wrong.
I am recovering.
And if there’s one reason this space exists, it’s this: so you know that recovering is possible—even if it doesn’t feel that way right now.
So, after starting to go to the gym, lifting heavy weights & learning methods of self-inquiry, yoga & going within, I discovered a few things that would change my life.
1. I am not my thoughts – literally (started meditating)
2. Emotions need to be processed to heal
3. Lifting weights and getting strong is so empowering and gave me a whole new sense of self-worth.
4. Learning about my Highly Sensitive Person Trait (HSP)
These all contributed to changing my life..
This blog is where I will share honestly.. Not perfectly, not from a pedestal—but from lived experience. Recovery is not necessarily a linear process either, at least it hasn’t been for me. There are wins, there’s fails, there’s hiccups and there are deep insights. I’ll take you through my journey with disordered eating, chronic anxiety, and depression—the messy parts, the breakthroughs, and everything in between.
I’ll also share the tools that have helped me rebuild: small shifts, practical guidance, workouts and the deeper inner work that slowly brought me back to myself.
My intention is to help you reconnect with your own internal compass. To feel grounded in your body again. To build a life that feels strong, steady, and genuinely yours—through mindfulness, meditation, movement, and self-trust.
If you’re here, you’re not alone.
And you’re not as far from yourself as you might feel.
Welcome. 🤍
